During his visit to Denmark in connection with the UN
Climate Conference, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger found time
in his tight schedule to meet up with Mr Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller and
members of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group’s Executive Board.
Mr Møller welcomed Mr Schwarzenegger, who was a well-known
actor prior to entering politics, and the two gentlemen discussed the
relationship between Maersk and the State of California and both
parties’ stance on environmental issues.
Mr Møller underscored the importance of open communication,
saying: “We won’t be offended. It is much better to let us know if you
require something of us to continue the good relationship.”
Governor Schwarzenegger agreed that communication is the way
forward when building long-term relationships: “We shouldn’t stop
working on our ‘marriage’, asking are you getting all that you need? You
should always pay attention in relationships, which is why I’m here; I
appreciate your business and why you’re important for California,” he
said.
The California governor noted that environmental concerns
are very high on his agenda, and that Maersk has been noticed as a
leader on the environment. “For us, it's important that we become more
environmentally friendly. For ships, this means certain laws requiring
them to be cleaner in the ports. Together we can make a big effort,” Mr
Schwarzenegger concluded.

Maersk Line and California
Maersk Line has been widely recognised for voluntarily
implementing a fuel switching policy that limits emissions of sulphur
oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particles into the air when
approaching California ports.
Earlier this year, a delegation of California state
senators visited Maersk headquarters to discuss the policy, and Maersk
Line was presented with a Certificate of Recognition at a Port of Los
Angeles Round Table meeting.
