BBC World Service’s One Planet team recently came on board the Ebba Maersk, one of eight container vessels that are currently the largest in the world.
In an eighteen minute broadcast entitled Sustainability on the High Seas they spoke to the master of the vessel, Captain J. Berwald, Maersk Line sustainability expert Jacob Sterling, Head of Maersk Maritime Technology, and Maersk Line CEO Søren Skou.
The programme, entitled Sustainability on the High Seas, takes a look at the efforts Maersk Line and the industry are taking to improve their environmental record. Shipping transports more than 90% of the world’s bulk cargo whilst contributing 3% to annual greenhouse gas emissions. That figure is rising as global trade increases, and some experts predict it could quadruple by 2050. So, any increases in efficiency have the ability to make a real difference.
