The Maersk Line management team recently approved a new environment strategy that has put us on course to be the carrier of choice for green shipping. The new strategy will help us improve our ability to deliver sustainable services, setting new industry standards for environmental performance.
“The new strategy is by no means a regulatory obligation,” explains Søren Stig Nielsen, Head of Maersk Line’s Sustainability Department. “It’s our own internal ambition to lead the industry into a new era of proactive environmental awareness.”
A smaller CO2 footprint for our customers The new strategy focuses on fuel savings and improved vessel operations. Making improvements in these areas will enable us to reduce our own CO2 emissions, which will in turn help our customers reduce their own CO2 footprint. We know our customers look at environmental performance across their supply chain, and we’re committed to providing a real choice of sustainable shipping services.
Promoting green values With our new environment strategy, lower emissions are just the start. We’ll also actively encourage green values by building constructive partnerships and promoting higher environmental standards in general. “The partnership effort will entail not only customers and suppliers, but also non-government organisations,” Mr Nielsen explains. “We’re already working closely with the World Wide Fund for Nature, and we aim to engage with others going forward.”
We look forward to embarking on this path towards greater environmental awareness and performance for the shipping industry. As Mr Nielsen puts it, “It’s a journey that will benefit all of us.”
